Project

SPARK designed a sophisticated enclosure to differentiate and reflect the product's innovative, high-performance technology.

Challenge

Echo 360 (Dulles, VA) is a multi-media technology company that develops proprietary learning tools for higher education. Their new flagship product, the Echo System, rapidly captures, processes and distributes classroom learning content - verbal lecture, slide presentation, video, notes - for instant mobile access by on and off-campus university students.

To capture the market for such an innovative product, the Echo System required a product design with sophisticated features. While Echo 360 concentrated on their core competencies of data recording and processing, they turned to SPARK to package the sophisticated electronics and communication technology and create a memorable aesthetic.

Although the Echo System is essentially black box technology that functions out of sight, it needed to be perceived as a high-performance, high-end product not just whiz-bang technology.

Solution
  • Designed a sleek, compact, injectionmolded, clamshell housing with a smoked Lexan center panel and plug-andplay rear connection panel.

  • Solved critical electromagnetic shielding issues with a combination of sheet metal, plastic coatings and grounding pads.

  • Expedited the development process helping Echo 360 get to market quickly to capitalize on the opportunity for distributed learning products.

Result

SPARK successfully delivered the final Echo System case design to Echo 360's U. S.-based production vendors. The Course Caster has been on the market since January 2009 months.

Leading universities are praising the technology and its performance and Echo 360 is primed for growth.
