Challenge
National Optronics (Charlottesville, VA) is the leading U. S. manufacturer of eyeglass lens processing technology for retail store and wholesale production applications.
The Clarity is the second SPARK project with National Optronics (NO), and it is the companion product of the Dimension (eyeglass lens tracer), the first product SPARK helped NO develop.
The Clarity presented a unique challenge: design an enclosure and chassis for a product that integrates two critical and labor-intensive steps (analyzing and blocking) into one semiauto - mated process. Moreover, the design and manufacture of optical products such as the Clarity requires extraordinary precision dictating intelligent DFM&A solutions.

Solution
- Reduced the total number internal chassis parts from nearly two dozen to two using permanent mold castings.
- Re-designed the chassis to maintain the sensitive, internal automated optical assemblies with higher precision.
- Reduced the amount of adjustment time required during final calibration of each unit.
- Designed an upright, user-friendly enclosure with interface display based on the re-designed chassis.

Result
The Clarity has been positively received by NO management, and it is in production and on the market. The new Clarity also further establishes NO's new, product line design language and its intent to create innovative products for the global market.
