Challenge
National Optronics (Charlottesville VA) is the leading
U. S. manufacturer of eyeglass lens processing technology
for retail store and wholesale production applications.
After recently being purchased by Essilor, a large French
optical company, National Optronics (NO) management
wanted to develop a more contemporary lens processing
product line with improved performance, functionality and
ergonomics. The 5T, which traces complex eyeglass frames,
was the first product for this initiative and was specifically
developed to target growth in the complex frames market.

|
Solution
To focus on their collaborative core strengths, NO developed the
internal mechanism design and electronics, and leveraged SPARK's
expertise in plastic part design and industrial design from concept
through production.
The 5T is the first advanced tracing system for all frames styles,
patterns and lenses, including high wrap, highly curved lenses.
| High wrap technology with unique rotating frame holder.
| Touch screen interface for simple operation.
| Optimized performance with individual settings for metal, plastic or flexible frames.
| Ethernet and wireless ready.
| Integrated, accessory storage door.
|
Result
The new 5T Tracer has been enthusiastically received by NO
management and has provided an innovative product platform
for branding and design language. NO's largest customer was so
impressed by the 5T that they have placed advanced orders for
multiple units.
SPARK's specific design contributions to the 5T include a modern
design aesthetic, a small footprint, an up-right, user-friendly design,
and cost-effective DFM&A.

SPARK's integrated product
design, engineering and
manufacturing approach
created an appealing,
functional 5T that was cost-effective
to manufacture.
